BettyMae Posted February 2, 2016 Hello again! Probably, I need your help to get some information about getting a higher internet speed. Are your internet connection running fast? I'm not so sure about this, but my internet is so slow. I was thinking that it's because I have been using 802.11n. My sister and other friends have upgraded their routers to 802.11ac and they were able to maximize its performance? I guess, it is much better to upgrade, but then I still want to know more about the differences. Do I have to upgrade my wireless routers to get faster speeds?
Jaxiki Posted February 2, 2016 You can upgrade but sometimes there's really no need unless it makes a massive difference. What's your speed right now ?
LilAznKay Posted February 7, 2016 To be honest, it really has to be depending on your ISP and what package they are offering you. I'm using wireless N and it's pretty fine for the stuff I need to do. However, if you do a lot of streaming, then go with AC. Again, it depends on what package/speed is offered by your ISP. Also, how strong is your wireless signal to your router? Sometimes, that can affect it too. You can just purchase a WIFI Extended if signal strength is an issue.
Candi Horn Posted February 8, 2016 To be honest, it really has to be depending on your ISP and what package they are offering you. I agree. Even if you have the fastest hardware if your provider is just giving you the package that you have applied for then that's the only speed that you will get.
BettyMae Posted March 1, 2016 hello guys! thanks for all your input and sorry for the late response (been busy looking for work)! My current plan is 5Mbps but the speed I'm getting is only 1.2 Mbps max. My sister has the same broadband plan and with the same company as well. She used to get around 2.5-2.8Mbps which is slightly faster than mine. When she opted for a router upgrade, she got at least 3.5Mbps which is great. That's why I thought about doing the same thing with my connection since it most likely has something to do with the old router I'm using. They got one from Cisco but I'm looking for a cheaper alternative since I just started working and don't have the money to spare LOL. Right now, I'm torn between LinkSys and Aerohive, Which do you think is the best option when it comes to value for money? Looking forward to your responses! Cheers. :orange:
LilAznKay Posted March 1, 2016 Does your sister live by/near you? Sometimes, location plays a key when your closer to where the ISP is providing that connection. So perhaps that's why she has a faster connection. She got 3.5mb speed on WIFI after she upgraded her router? With regards to routers, it all depends if you live in an apartment/condo or house. There can be disturbance with the signal since there's so many signals that can interfere with your's. You can always try it first and return the router for a refund if it doesn't work out. Linksys is good brand and reliable. Haven't heard of Aerohive. Another brand you can take a look at are D-Link and Netgear. Good luck!
roosta Posted March 3, 2016 As LilAznKay said, there could be interference. Do you have a stable connection, or just it just peak at those speeds? If you feel like tinkering a bit to maximize performance, you could log into your router settings and try changing to different channels to see which one has the least interference on it. If you're really looking for a new router though, I can personally vouch for Netgear and Linksys. Both have served me well in the past, no clue about Aerohive. Good luck.
